Romería do Corpiño (Pilgrimage of O Corpiño)

Marian Romaria with masses and processions. The origin of the "Romería do Corpiño" is to be found in the oral tradition collected in a document that is preserved in the parish church of Santa Baia de Losón.

According to this story, in the middle of s. VIII in the wing of Mount Carrio lived a hermit who encouraged the worship of the Virgin Mary and the neighbors came to him who considered him a holy man. When he died, the body remained uncorrupted and the neighbors built a chapel dedicated to San Adrián, and the place became known as O Corpiño. With the Saracen invasion the body disappeared and the chapel was ruined and forgotten.

Long time later, in the s. XII, some shepherd children took shelter in the ruined chapel fleeing from the storm and were surrounded by a mysterious light emanating from an image of the Virgin carrying the child Jesus on her right arm and a bouquet of flowers on her left. The virgin told them to make the Sign of the Cross and the storm stopped. The children’s parents, seeing the cattle arrive without the shepherds, went out to look for them and found them in the chapel, but did not believe their story. Finally, after several apparitions, on the day of Saint John, the priest and all the assembled people attended a last apparition and undertook the construction of a chapel that would host an image of the Virgin Appeared.

Very soon, the fame of the sanctuary spread, and thousands offered to come to the sanctuary to implore the Virgin remedy for their ills. For a long time the Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Corpiño was known to go to the people affected by evil eye, who before the attempts of the priest to expel the devil from his interior featured shocking scenes with big cries and struggles. Today the scenes of demoniacs are not so common but throughout the year and especially on the big day and the eve continues to be one of the pilgrimages with greater influx of devotees from all over Galicia.

On the 25th of March we celebrate the so-called "Winter Bodice" or "Small Bodice".
